What is Facilitation?
In 1996 the Governor of California signed important Legislation with regard to facilitation. As a result of this Legislation, a group of hardworking facilitators began a group called ACADEMY OF CALIFORNIA ADOPTION PROFESSIONAL (ACAP). This group, of which I am proud to have been the Vice President, was responsible for organizing and regulating its members so that through our efforts our facilitation services are now authorized and regulated by Family Code Sections 8623 through 8638. Restrictions now apply to advertisements. Facilitators must be bonded and operate under a valid business license here in the State of California..
Facilitators may find and locate birth mothers and assist them in choosing the adoptive couple of her choice. We are also valuable in assisting adoptive couples and locating the right birth mother. A facilitator should be considered when you no longer want to wait forever to start your family. Many adoptive couples as well as birth mothers will testify to the importance of using a facilitator. Most birth mothers are just pregnant at the wrong time. Both parties need clear-cut options, coupled with structured guidelines, brought forth by an ethical professional as they are assisted through the adoption process. A facilitator is considered by many to be a valuable tool as well as a support system in open independent adoptions.
